We're kicking of a week of discussion on Sacco and Vanzetti Must Die!, Mark Binelli's serious romp through the terrain of anarchy, slapstick, ethnicity, and the trials of partnership. Mark will be blogging here on Wednesday, and Thursday and Friday will see a podcast and print interview. In the meantime, members of the Litblog Co-Op will be blogging with their takes on various aspects of the book -- feel free to chime in in the comments.
But for everyone out there, whether or not you've read the book, we're continuing our tradition of the book contest. Winner of this week's challenge will receive not only a signed copy of Sacco & Vanzetti Must Die!, but an original publicity poster with the book's striking cover, signed by Mark himself!. Here, then, is your contest question:
What historical "couple" would make a great slapstick comedy team, a la Sacco & Vanzetti, and why?
The contest will be open all week. Post your entries as comments on this post, and be sure to link to your homepage or email so we can contact you if you win. The winner will be notified by email and then announced here at the end of the week. Good luck!

Elvis and Nixon. One time meeting, my foot. A gold mine of fictional possibility.

Groucho and Karl Marx. Karl's discourses would undoubtedly be thought-provoking, but would eventually turn dry, weighty and ponderous, at which point Groucho would sidle in, wiggle his eyebrows and fire off a deadly one-liner, adding desperately needed comic relief. Had Groucho been involved in the worldwide dissemination process, Communism probably would have been much better received, even amongst hidebound capitalists.

Hitler and Churchill - they've got that thin & fat dynamic, and who could resist Adolf's little wiggly mustache.

Emma Goldman and Leon Czolgosz.
They could be like Boris and Natasha, trying to spread anarchy around the world but with hilarious missteps. Emma would petulantly threaten to withhold her love unless Czolgosz tried to assassinate whomever she chose.

Napoleon and Josephine
She is the straight-woman, he is the hen-pecked husband with the eponymous complex and delusions of grandeur. Whether in a Paris drawing room, the Russian front or floating in luxury down the Nile the premise is always the same: Jo does her best to calm Nap and prevent him from executing a clueless schmo who has made some sort of height-challenged reference.
Schmo: Supplies are running short Sir!
Nap: Off with his head!
Jo: Now dear...

A late entry - George Custer and Sitting Bull. There would be a limitless opportunity for routines - two egos, two cultures and tragedy for both individuals which is part of all great comedy.

And the winner is... Ed Vick with Hitler and Churchill!
Several of you came up with extremely creative suggestions, but Ed's image was the one that made several us at the LBC laugh out loud. So he wins the swag.
I'll be getting in touch with Ed via email to find out where to mail the signed book and poster.
Thank you all for playing!
