Hey, that funhouse 'ville stuff piques my interest. Is there any indication that the Don Quixote is a stand-in for any real world Louisville "sumptuous dives" with literary names?

(I don't think I'm allowed to htmlize it up in here--I was gonna ref www.therudyardkipling.com or the InKY Reading Series held there that I believe Gann's participated in.)

I don't know if it's directly based on the Rud or even a tip of the hat. Hopefully, we'll find out when he stops by the site later this week.

There's a bunch of the Rudyard Kipling in the Don Q, but there's also a touch of the Mag Bar (the portrait of J. Edgar Hoover over the fishnetted manequin legs, for instance).

Kirby has said he also based some of it on a bar somewhere else, DC or somewhere (sorry for not paying closer attention)?

What hit me hardest about this novel is the treatment of place as character ... it reminded me of the best parts of Lethem's "The Fortress of Solitude" and all of Roddy Doyle's Dublin books. I could almost picture the Old Town bricks breathing.

My copy's at home, I'll have to pop back in later with deeper comments.

Mag Bar -- of course!

Definitely agree on place as character here; it's really what unifies the book and lets it take some of the strange, fascinating little side journeys. An anchor around which all the stories unfold.
